Back on Mac
Robert Scoble notes that the squeaky wheels are buzzing about Apple’s release of Safari for Windows. Personally I don’t think it matters much. Sure, a speedy browser is great and there’s something to be said for the brushed metal aesthetic but I don’t recall much of a clamor for Safari on Windows. We shall see, but there won’t be be much more than a brief dent in the usage of Firefox that will be quickly erased when Gran Paradiso launches. This is especially true since font readability is crap for Safari on Windows.
Actually, the port of Safari irritates me a bit because today is the day I switched back to using a Mac. It’s been a long hiatus. The last time I seriously used Mac OS was back when I was playing Marathon and mucking with HyperCard. Good times. My wonderful wife bought me a new MacBook Pro (15″ 2.4 GHz). Wow, I had forgotten how great an experience Mac can be. It looks like I’m in good company getting back into the swing of things. Marc Andreessen’s tips have been quite timely and helpful. Hopefully I’ll be able to wean myself off of right-clicking (oh I shall miss the easy to access context menus) and relearn all the keyboard shortcuts. I will tell you that OS X is not kind to left handed people by default. I mouse with my right hand, yet I trackpad with my left. Control clicking is definitely more difficult. Any suggestions? I may end up remapping that crazy second “enter” key that I never quite worked into my routine. I quickly took a look at the Safari 3.0 beta on Windows earlier today and that took just a little bit of excitement out of the MBP unboxing. Still though, a great experience.
